How to take care of your Wenderplant Terrarium

If you’ve recently welcomed a wenderplant terrarium into your home or office, congrats! You’ve got yourself a charming little green companion that’s not only a joy to look at but also a fantastic way to bring a bit of nature indoors. But how do you keep this unique terrarium thriving? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered with some easy, practical tips that will have your terrarium looking lush and happy in no time.

Getting to Know Your Terrarium Care

First things first, let’s talk about what makes your terrarium special. These handcrafted beauties are more than just plants in a glass container. They’re mini ecosystems, carefully designed to create a balanced environment where plants can flourish with minimal fuss. But that doesn’t mean they’re completely hands-off. Understanding the basics of terrarium care will help you keep your green friend in tip-top shape.

Light is Your Terrarium's Best Friend

One of the most important things to remember is lighting. Your terrarium loves bright, indirect sunlight. Think of it as a sunny spot near a window but not right on the windowsill where the sun’s rays can be too intense. Direct sunlight can cause the glass to act like a magnifying glass, overheating your plants and causing them to wilt or burn.

If natural light is limited, don’t panic! You can use a grow light to supplement. Just make sure it’s on for about 10-12 hours a day to mimic natural conditions. Remember, too little light and your plants might get leggy or lose their vibrant colour.

Watering Without Overdoing It

Watering a terrarium is a bit like Goldilocks - not too much, not too little, just right. Because your terrarium is enclosed or semi-enclosed, it retains moisture better than a regular pot. Overwatering is the most common mistake and can lead to root rot or mould.

Here’s a simple watering routine to follow:

  • Check the terrarium's moisture by observing it. If there is a fair amount of condensation on the glass and the soil is dark, do not water it. If the soil is getting pale brown, it is time to give it a spray.

  • Use a spray bottle or a small watering can with a narrow spout to add water gently.

  • Water sparingly - usually once every few months or even longer (I never water mine), but this depends on your home’s humidity and temperature.

  • If you see condensation on the glass, that’s a good sign your terrarium is holding moisture well. If it’s excessive, open the lid for a few hours to let it air out.

Keep an Eye on Temperature and Humidity

Your terrarium prefers a stable environment. Sudden temperature changes can stress the plants. Ideally, keep it in a room that stays between 18-24°C.

Humidity is usually just right inside the terrarium, but if you live in a very dry area, you might want to mist the plants lightly every now and then. Just don’t go overboard!

Keeping Your Mascot Happy and Healthy

Now that you’ve got the basics down, here are some extra tips to keep your terrarium looking its best:

  • Prune regularly: Trim any dead or yellowing leaves to keep the terrarium tidy and prevent disease.

  • Clean the glass: Wipe the outside of the glass gently with a soft cloth to keep your view crystal clear.

  • Rotate your terrarium: Give it a little turn every week so all sides get equal light exposure.
